Reykjavk is located on the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula
Reykjavk is located on the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula and is the capital city of Iceland. It is located in Southwestern Iceland, but it is still the northern most capital city in the world. However, it is not as cold as one would expect. Winter temperatures rarely go below the teens (Fahrenheit). One can thank the jet stream for that. The summer is cool, usually with highs close to 60 degrees.
Over 60 of the population of Iceland lives in Reykjavik, but there are no skyscrapers in the city. The tallest building is only about 15 stories high. The city boasts some beautiful buildings, and many of them are very old. Many of these buildings are historical sites. In fact, its parliament building is the oldest one in the world that is still being used for that purpose.
To Americans, the most memorable event that happened in this city is the Reykjavik Summit that took place in 1986 between Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan. While originally thought to be a failure, it was eventually credited with helping bring about the INF treaty.
Reykjavik is not a conventional tourist destination, but it is a beautiful city and worth considering for your next trip.
